Born in Campbell River and raised in the Vancouver Island community, Cynthia Barker’s path to physiotherapy has taken her from Victoria to Amsterdam, with clinical experiences spanning Europe, South Africa, and Canada.
After completing her undergraduate studies at the University of Victoria, Cynthia moved to Amsterdam to pursue her physiotherapy education. She went on to build her clinical experience in both private practice and a neurological rehabilitation centre, working with a diverse range of orthopedic and musculoskeletal conditions, as well as complex neurological conditions including spinal cord injuries, stroke, Parkinson’s disease, and multiple sclerosis.
Her international training also included a 2.5-month internship at a paediatric hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, where she supported children recovering from surgery, children living with cerebral palsy, and infants receiving treatment for clubfoot. She also completed a clinical internship in Geneva, Switzerland, working in French - an experience that allows her to offer care to French-speaking patients.
After returning to Victoria in 2025, Cynthia completed her Canadian credentialling and is delighted to once again call Vancouver Island home. She is especially happy to be closer to the ocean, mountains, and the outdoor adventures that make the Island so special.
A Forward-Thinking Approach to Movement and Longevity
Cynthia believes physiotherapy has an important role to play not only in recovering from injury, but also in preserving the strength, mobility, balance, and physical confidence that support a healthy, active life.
At our clinic, she brings a broad rehabilitation background and an appreciation for individualized care to help patients and members better understand their bodies, address physical challenges, and work toward meaningful functional goals. Her approach supports a more proactive view of health - one that considers how movement and physical function today can influence independence, resilience, and quality of life in the years ahead.
By integrating physiotherapy into a broader, personalized approach to longevity, Cynthia looks forward to helping patients and members move beyond simply managing limitations and toward building the capacity to keep doing the things they love.
Beyond the Clinic
Cynthia’s curiosity and sense of adventure extend well beyond her clinical work. She has volunteered at two Olympic Games: Vancouver 2010, where she helped guide audiences during the opening and closing ceremonies, and Rio 2016, where she recorded the order of competing boats at the rowing venue in real time. That experience sparked a lasting interest in rowing, which she later pursued by joining a rowing club in Amsterdam.
Now back on Vancouver Island, Cynthia enjoys camping, exploring the outdoors, and making the most of life near the ocean and mountains.

A doctor’s referral is not necessary as physiotherapists are primary health care providers. However, some extended health care insurance plans require a doctor’s note in order for you to claim your treatment. It is best to check with your employer or insurance provider to obtain the specifics of how your plan works and what is required.
Most extended health plans offer coverage for physiotherapy in Victoria, BC. The amount covered varies from plan to plan, therefore it is always best to contact your extended health provider directly to find out exactly what is covered under your plan. Our clinic direct bills most insurance providers for physiotherapy. Please visit our Direct Billing page to see if your insurance company is one we can bill directly for our physiotherapy services.
When you arrive at Beta for your physiotherapy appointment, you will be greeted by one of our patient care coordinators who will make sure that we have all your patient information up to date and will help you with anything that is outstanding. Your first visit will usually take about an hour your physiotherapist will guide you through the following:
- A health history, physical examination, any pain you may be experiencing, hands on treatment and your fitness goals.
- The physiotherapist will look at how you move, perform assessments, examine your posture, and carry out any other tests that are relevant to your appointment.
- Patients are encouraged to communicate any pain or discomfort you experience during an assessment or treatment.
- As much information as you can provide is the best way to help your physiotherapist better understand your condition and meet your health and fitness goals.
If it is your first visit for physiotherapy there will be some important intake forms for you to fill out. For your convenience all of our forms are sent to you electronically when your appointment is booked. You can fill them out/submit them online without the need for printing. If you have any difficulty completing the online forms please arrive 10 – 15 minutes early for your appointment and our reception staff will be happy to help you. If you are a returning patient there is no need to arrive more than 5 minutes early unless you are needing to update your personal or billing/insurance information.
For physiotherapy appointments please wear clothing that is easy to move in. You may be asked to disrobe to your comfort level to access the structures around your injury or area of concern. We will respect your privacy and the privacy of others by working with you in a private room and by providing you with adequate draping or treating you in your clothes. Depending on the nature of your treatment, or where you are coming from (ex: work) you may want to bring a change of clothing for your treatment that allow for unrestricted movement.
This will be determined by both you and your physiotherapist based on your individual healthcare needs. Should they be required, your practitioner will discuss the frequency of upcoming treatments to find a schedule that best suits your healthcare goals.
